Light Tackle

The waters between Cairns and Cape Bowling Green near Townsville offer the best light tackle Black Marlin action in the world. These juveniles range from 30lb to 150 lb. In addition we have large numbers of Pacific Sailfish in attendance together with the usual toothy critter brigade including Spanish Mackerel, Tuna ,Barracuda, Wahoo, Mahi-mahi etc.

We generally use 12lb, 16lb or 20lb test tackle and are equipped with Shimano and finnor reels and custom rods.

Black Marlin and Sailfish are found around the many bait aggregations on the inside of the Great Barrier Reef. New Moon II was one of the first boats fitted with forward scanning sonar in Australia and helps locate Bait schools easier.

In 1997 the New Moon II crew developed a new "bait and switch " technique for Black Marlin which lead to the champion boat and team at the 1997 and 1998 Townsville light tackle tournament.

Light tackle charters are available from February to September, the best marlin action is June to September. From October to January we fish outside the reef for a mixture of giant Marlin, Sailfish Wahoo and Mahi-mahi.

Charters are available for day or extended trips from Cairns anytime of the year or Townsville Aug/Sept only.
